    Frequently asked questions

What everyone wonders before setting out

What is the real difficulty of Mont Blanc ascent?

Mont Blanc ascent is rated AD (Fairly Difficult) on the normal Goûter route. It requires excellent physical fitness, experience on glaciated terrain and altitude acclimatization. This is not a hike: it is a high-altitude mountaineering route.

What is the price of a Mont Blanc ascent with a guide?

In group format (2 days, 1 guide for 2 clients), the guide service alone is around €800–950 per person. All-inclusive packages including refuges and mountain railways (e.g., Chamonix Guides Company) start around €2,580/person. Add: refuges (~€143/night at Goûter), TMB (€40). Indicative total budget: €1,150–2,700.

Is Mont Blanc ascent accessible to a beginner?

Not without preparation. Mont Blanc ascent requires prior experience on glaciated terrain (crampons, ice axe), high physical fitness and ideally one or two 4,000 m peaks beforehand. For a motivated beginner: allow 9 to 12 months of training, use a certified UIAGM guide and first climb Grand Paradis (4,061 m) or Breithorn (4,164 m).

How long does it take to climb Mont Blanc?

Two full days minimum on the Goûter route: Day 1 ascent to Goûter refuge (3,835 m), Day 2 summit and descent. Some add an extra night at Tête Rousse for acclimatization.

Do you need a guide for Mont Blanc?

No, there is no mandatory permit or guide requirement in France. But for anyone without confirmed glaciated terrain experience, using a certified UIAGM mountain guide is strongly recommended. Around 20,000 people attempt the ascent each year; 50% reach the summit.
