    Frequently asked questions

What everyone wonders before setting out

What is the real difficulty of Mont Blanc ascent?

Mont Blanc ascent is rated AD (Fairly Difficult) on the normal Goûter route. It requires excellent physical fitness, experience on glaciated terrain and altitude acclimatization. This is not a hike: it is a high-altitude mountaineering route.

What is the price of a Mont Blanc ascent with a guide?

In group format (2 days, 1 guide for 2 clients), the guide service alone is around €800–950 per person. All-inclusive packages including refuges and mountain railways (e.g., Chamonix Guides Company) start around €2,580/person. Add: refuges (~€143/night at Goûter), TMB (€40). Indicative total budget: €1,150–2,700.

Is Mont Blanc ascent accessible to a beginner?

Not without preparation. Mont Blanc ascent requires prior experience on glaciated terrain (crampons, ice axe), high physical fitness and ideally one or two 4,000 m peaks beforehand. For a motivated beginner: allow 9 to 12 months of training, use a certified UIAGM guide and first climb Grand Paradis (4,061 m) or Breithorn (4,164 m).

How long does it take to climb Mont Blanc?

Two full days minimum on the Goûter route: Day 1 ascent to Goûter refuge (3,835 m), Day 2 summit and descent. Some add an extra night at Tête Rousse for acclimatization.

Do you need a guide for Mont Blanc?

No, there is no mandatory permit or guide requirement in France. But for anyone without confirmed glaciated terrain experience, using a certified UIAGM mountain guide is strongly recommended. Between 15,000 and 20,000 attempts are recorded each summer according to the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix, with a success rate of 40 to 65% depending on weather and support.

What is the difference between climbing Mont Blanc, the Tour du Mont Blanc and the UTMB?

Three distinct projects. The climb reaches the summit at 4,805.59 m: this is mountaineering, with crampons, ice axe and roped travel, over 2 to 3 days. The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is a 170 km hike that circles the massif in 7 to 11 days, without ever reaching the summit and without technical gear. The UTMB is a timed foot race held in late August, with mandatory qualification.

Are the Marathon du Mont-Blanc and the UTMB the same race?

No. The Marathon du Mont-Blanc takes place in late June, organized by the Chamonix Sports Club, and requires no UTMB Index. The UTMB is run in late August under a different organization and requires a valid UTMB Index plus a Running Stone. Only the Marathon's 90 km race is listed as a UTMB Index qualifying race.
