    Mont Blanc is not a uniform summit. Its climbing routes are spread across several flanks, each with its own geography, access, huts, risks and history. Understanding Mont Blanc's faces helps you better read its itineraries and their level of commitment.

    Goûter / Saint-Gervais flank

    The historic flank of the normal route, accessed from Saint-Gervais and the Mont-Blanc Tramway. The most frequented itinerary in the massif.

    Routes: Goûter normal route

    Huts: Tête Rousse, Goûter, Nid d'Aigle

    Risks: Rockfall in the Grand Couloir, crowds, altitude.

    Commitment: Moderate to sustained

    Grade: PD−

    Key altitude: Goûter Hut — 3,835 m (FFCAM)

    Chamonix / Trois Monts flank

    High-altitude flank from the Aiguille du Midi, a high-mountain atmosphere with hanging glaciers.

    Routes: Trois Monts traverse

    Huts: Cosmiques

    Risks: Seracs, crevasses, steep slopes, exposure.

    Commitment: Sustained

    Grade: PD+/AD−

    Key altitude: Aiguille du Midi — 3,842 m

    North flank / Grands Mulets / Bossons

    Historic north flank, frequented for spring ski mountaineering.

    Routes: Grands Mulets

    Huts: Grands Mulets

    Risks: Crevasses, seracs, variable glacier conditions.

    Commitment: Sustained

    Grade: F/PD

    Key altitude: Grands Mulets Hut — 3,057 m (FFCAM)

    Italian flank / Val Veny / Gonella

    Wild, long flank, accessed via the Val Veny on the Italian side.

    Routes: Gonella route

    Huts: Gonella

    Risks: Length, complex glacier, relative isolation.

    Commitment: Sustained

    Grade: AD

    Key altitude: Gonella Hut — 3,071 m (CAI)

    Brenva

    Major historic Italian flank, the setting for major routes of great mountaineering.

    Routes: Brenva, Voie Major

    Huts: Approach huts on the Italian side

    Risks: Seracs, exposure, very high commitment.

    Commitment: Very high

    Grade: AD+ to TD

    Key altitude: Monzino Hut — 2,590 m (CAI) / Eccles bivouac — 3,850 m (FFCAM)

    Brouillard / Frêney

    Major Italian flank, among the most impressive on Mont Blanc.

    Routes: Brouillard, Innominata

    Huts: Monzino

    Risks: Commitment, length, isolation.

    Commitment: Very high

    Grade: AD to ED

    Key altitude: Gonella Hut — 3,071 m (CAI), the sector's logistical base

    Miage / Bionnassay

    Sector of aesthetic ridges connecting the Dômes de Miage to the Aiguille de Bionnassay.

    Routes: Miage-Bionnassay

    Huts: Durier

    Risks: Thin ridges, exposure.

    Commitment: High

    Key altitude: Durier Hut — 3,358 m (FFCAM)

    Peuterey

    Major, long, complex ridge route of the massif.

    Routes: Peuterey

    Huts: Approach huts on the Italian side

    Risks: Length, difficult retreat, weather.

    Commitment: Very high

    Grade: ED+
