Cosmiques Refuge: altitude, prices and booking (3,613 m)

Cosmiques Refuge is a high-mountain hut at 3,613 m, on the Col du Midi glacier, at the foot of the south side of the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m). It is France's second-highest refuge, managed by the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix. Its operator presents it as a strategic departure point for several major routes: the Three Monts traverse to Mont Blanc's summit, the Vallée Blanche ski descent, and the Cosmiques ridge.

The refuge advertises access in under an hour from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi (cable car from Chamonix). For a rope team descending the Cosmiques ridge itself — a 40-45° slope, fitted with fixed ropes in season — allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours instead: this committing descent requires crampons, an ice axe and glacier experience, not a casual walk-in.

Online reservation is mandatory, directly on the refuge's official site. A deposit is required at booking, with the balance auto-charged the day before arrival; a 2.5% booking fee applies to group reservations. Cancellation: deposit refunded (fees excluded) more than 48 hours before arrival, forfeited within 48 hours, full amount due for an unreported no-show.

The refuge's main role is as base camp for the Three Monts traverse, which links Mont Blanc du Tacul (4,248 m), Mont Maudit (4,465 m) and Mont Blanc's summit (4,805.59 m). Rope teams spend the night here before departing between midnight and 2 a.m., to benefit from firmer frozen snow and avoid afternoon storms.
