What is alpine climbing at Mont Blanc?
Mont Blanc (4,805.59 m according to the official IGN/OGE 2021 measurement) is the highest summit in Western Europe. Climbing it is alpine climbing: a discipline combining progression on snow, ice and rock, with specific techniques — crampons, ice axe, roped progression on glacier, and management of objective risks (crevasses, seracs, rockfall).
Unlike even a difficult hiking ascent, climbing Mont Blanc engages the climber on exposed terrain where a fall can be fatal. The rating of the normal route is PD− (Peu Difficile / Moderately Difficult) on the French alpine scale — which does not mean "easy," but "accessible to a properly prepared alpinist."
Alpine climbing at Mont Blanc attracts between 15,000 and 20,000 attempts each summer, according to data from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix. The PGHM (Mountain Police) averages 100 to 150 interventions per year on the massif, with 20 to 30 deaths. The Required Level for Alpine Climbing at Mont Blanc
ENSA (Ecole Nationale de Ski et d'Alpinisme) and SNGM (Syndicat National des Guides de Montagne) agree on 5 fundamental criteria to validate before attempting Mont Blanc:

Altitude is the most underestimated factor. At 4,805 m, atmospheric pressure is about 56% of sea-level pressure. Available oxygen is reduced by 42%, causing fatigue, nausea and — in severe cases — Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). An alpinist in excellent physical condition but unacclimatized may be forced to turn back at 3,500 m.
The PGHM recommends having completed at least one glaciated ascent at 3,500-4,000 m in the 2 months before the attempt. Grand Paradiso (4,061 m, Italy) or Breithorn (4,164 m, Switzerland) are the two reference peaks for this prior acclimatization.

The Best Season for Alpine Climbing at Mont Blanc
The climbing window at Mont Blanc extends from mid-June to mid-September. Outside this period, huts are closed and weather conditions are incompatible with safe ascent.
Mid-June — Hut Opening, Fresh Snow Possible
Huts typically open in mid-June. Snow is still fresh on the Goûter ridge: risk of slabs and passages on bare ice. Rope teams are fewer. Suitable for experienced alpinists capable of managing unstable snow.
July-August — Peak Season, Best Conditions
Snow is consolidated, weather windows more frequent and better forecastable (Météo-France High Mountain bulletin). This is peak season: up to 300 rope teams per day at the height of summer. Goûter and Tête Rousse huts fill to capacity as soon as reservations open in April. Must book well in advance via the CAF website.
September — Deteriorating Conditions, Fewer Crowds
Snow begins to recrystallize and rockfall increases on the Grand Couloir (less snow to fill the climbing lines). Weather windows shorten. After September 10, margins narrow rapidly. Reserved for experienced alpinists familiar with the massif.
Regardless of the season, one rule is absolute: never commit to the ridge without a stable weather window of at least 3 days. Consult the Météo-France High Mountain bulletin and the PGHM Chamonix bulletin the day before departure.
Preparation
How to Prepare for an Ascent of Mont Blanc
Preparing for alpine climbing at Mont Blanc combines three inseparable pillars: physical fitness, high-altitude technique, and altitude acclimatization. Neglecting any one of the three leads to failure or accident.
1. Physical Fitness (3-6 months before)
Goal: be capable of 10 hours of continuous effort at altitude with a 10-12 kg pack. Standard plan recommended by ENSA: hill walking with elevation gain 3× per week (minimum 800 m D+), long outing on weekends (1,200-1,500 m D+), running 2× per week in zone 2 heart rate. Strength training: squats, lunges, isometric core work.
2. Alpine Technique (FFCAM courses or with a guide)
Without mastery of crampons and ice axe, no amount of fitness can compensate. FFCAM and UIAGM-certified guides offer 3-5 day introductory mountaineering courses on the massif's glaciers (Aiguille du Tour, Couvercle hut, Leschaux). These cover: glacier progression, crevasse crossing, roped techniques, alpine first aid.
3. Altitude Acclimatization (2 months before)
Spending one or two nights above 3,000 m in the 2 months before the attempt is essential. A practice peak at 3,500-4,200 m serves to validate both acclimatization and technique. Grand Paradiso (4,061 m), Breithorn (4,164 m) or Dôme de Miage (3,673 m) are reference peaks in the massif.
