Choosing boots is one of the most important decisions for the Mont Blanc ascent. An unsuitable boot causes blisters, limits crampon precision and exposes you to frostbite. Here are the essential criteria.

    Classification

The three types of mountaineering boots

    TypeCompatible cramponMont Blanc
    B3 — Rigid mountaineering bootsAutomatic step-in cramponsRecommended
    B2 — Semi-rigid bootsSemi-automatic crampons (rear bail)Recommended

    Selection criteria

    6 criteria for choosing well

    01

    Sole rigidity

The sole must be rigid enough to transmit cramponing force without flexing. Check B2 or B3 compatibility with your chosen crampons.

    02

    Thermal insulation

Above 3,500 m, temperatures can drop to -15°C. Sufficient insulation (Thinsulate or equivalent) prevents frostbite on the feet.

    03

    Waterproofing

A GORE-TEX membrane or equivalent is essential. Wet morning snow plus prolonged effort demand durable protection.

    04

    Shaft height

High shaft (above the ankle) for stability on rough terrain and hold with crampons.

    05

    Crampon compatibility

Check the binding system: front welt for semi-automatic crampons, front AND rear welt for full automatic binding.

    06

    Size and volume

Take a half-size larger if wearing thick socks. Feet swell with effort — too tight means frostbite risk.
