Michel-Gabriel Paccard, a doctor from Chamonix, is the other figure behind the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786.
A doctor trained in Turin, several attempts before 1786
Trained in medicine in Turin, then capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Michel-Gabriel Paccard made several attempts before succeeding: an unsuccessful first attempt in 1783 with Marc-Théodore Bourrit, then in 1784 via the Tacul flank with Pierre Balmat. A man of science and observation, he prepared the 1786 ascent with experimental rigour — barometer, thermometer and observations at altitude.
8 August 1786: the first ascent
On 8 August 1786, Paccard reached the summit of Mont Blanc with Jacques Balmat, achieving the historic first ascent. He took barometric and thermometric observations there, bringing an experimental dimension to the feat that was unprecedented for the time.
The Bourrit controversy: credit stolen for two centuries
The feat was almost immediately tarnished by controversy. Marc-Théodore Bourrit, who never reached the summit himself, published an account in the Mercure de France that made Balmat the sole hero and reduced Paccard to the rank of a client carried by the guide — going so far as to hint to Saussure that Paccard hadn't reached the summit. Paccard published a rebuttal in the Journal de Lausanne in February 1787, to which Bourrit immediately replied by repeating his version.
A myth that lasted two centuries
Alexandre Dumas's account, which adopted Balmat's version as sole conqueror, durably entrenched this myth in popular culture. It took the work of British Alpine Club mountaineers, including Edward Whymper and T. Graham Brown, to set the record straight — but this work, written in English, long went unnoticed by French-speaking readers.
Justice of the peace and mayor of Chamonix
After his feat, Paccard became a justice of the peace and then mayor of Chamonix, holding revolutionary convictions that cost him popularity under the Empire and the Restoration. He died in 1827, without having seen his contribution fully recognized in his lifetime.
