Which backpack for Mont Blanc?
Written by Victor Michel — history enthusiast and passionate alpinist based in Chamonix. Published May 10, 2026 · Updated July 19, 2026
A backpack is a key element of comfort and safety on Mont Blanc. It must remain light, structured, capable of holding crampons, ice axe, helmet and technical layers without hindering progress.
Ideal volume: 30 to 40 liters
30 to 40 liters covers most Mont Blanc configurations (2 days in a staffed refuge). Below 30 L, layers, food and technical gear don't fit comfortably. Above 45 L, the backpack becomes too heavy and destabilizing on steep terrain.
Carrying comfort and structure
A structured back panel (dorsal frame) and effective ventral belt relieve the shoulders, which becomes critical at altitude where every extra effort has an amplified energy cost. Test the backpack loaded at 10 kg before the ascent.
Quick access to gear
Being able to remove crampons, ice axe, helmet or an extra layer without emptying the entire backpack is essential during transitions (before the couloir, at the summit, during weather changes). Prefer backpacks with side attachments for the ice axe and compression straps for the helmet.
| Criterion | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | 30 to 40 L | Sufficient for technical gear and layers without overloading |
| Weight | As light as possible at equivalent structure | Energy savings at altitude |
| Carrying | Structured straps + ventral belt | Stability on technical terrain |
| Attachments | Ice axe holder, crampon straps, helmet attachment | Quick access to gear |
| Fabric | Abrasion resistant | Durability against rock and ice |
