How to dress for the Mont Blanc ascent

    Quick answer

For Mont Blanc, the outfit relies on a 3-layer system: (1) technical merino or synthetic base layer, (2) light down jacket or fleece for insulation, (3) breathable waterproof hardshell jacket with helmet-compatible hood. Bottom: softshell or hardshell mountaineering pants with crampon reinforcement. Accessories: 2 pairs of gloves, beanie, neck gaiter, category 4 sunglasses.

The 3-layer system — how it works

    1

    Base layer — moisture management

The base layer is in direct contact with skin. Its sole role: wick sweat outward to keep skin dry. If skin stays damp, cold sets in fast — this is the mechanism behind many cases of hypothermia.

    Material

Merino wool or technical synthetic. Never cotton — it retains moisture and chills the body.

    Relevant items

Thermal top + bottom underwear, technical merino socks

💡 Bring 2 sets if the ascent lasts 2 days. Change your base layer at the refuge.

    2

    Mid layer — thermal insulation

The mid layer traps warm air around the body. It is essential during breaks, at the refuge, at the summit and during any stop. It can be removed during intense effort.

    Material

Light down jacket (down or synthetic) or fleece. A compressible down jacket is ideal: light and easy to pack.

    Relevant items

Light down jacket OR fleece mid-layer

💡 The down jacket goes in the pack on the way up, comes out at the summit and during every long break. A habit to build in training.

    3

Outer layer — protection from the elements

The outer layer protects against wind, rain, snow and bad weather. It's the barrier between the hostile environment and the warm layers. It must be both waterproof and breathable so it doesn't trap sweat.

    Material

Hardshell with waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex, NeoShell). Helmet-compatible hood mandatory. Some French brands such as Cimalp develop their own proprietary membrane (Ultrashell®), rated up to 20,000 Schmerber and 80,000 g/m²/24h breathability.

    Relevant items

    Mountaineering hardshell jacket

💡 Put the jacket on BEFORE you get cold or before wind exposure — not after. At altitude, temperatures drop very quickly.

    Lower body

    Pants and leg base layer

    Mountaineering pants

Stretch softshell in normal conditions, hardshell or overpants in bad weather. Crampon reinforcement mandatory.

    Leg base layer

Technical merino or synthetic tights in cold weather or at night. Optional in summer on the Goûter route.

    Accessories

Head, hands and feet — extremities first

    Warm beanie

Worn almost constantly above 4,000 m. The summit of Mont Blanc regularly drops below -15°C.

    Neck gaiter / balaclava

Protects the face and neck exposed to wind. Put on as soon as temperatures drop.

    Thin gloves (handling)

For handling gear, the map, the headlamp, the rope. Always kept in the pockets.

    Warm waterproof gloves

For wind and cold exposure. Minimum 2 pairs — a wet pair stops warming.

    Category 4 sunglasses

UV radiation at high altitude is extreme. Snow blindness is permanent. Wraparound glacier glasses mandatory.

    High merino socks

2 pairs minimum. Feet in cramponable boots need technical socks.
