The seasonal window
Climbing season: mid-June to mid-September
The Mont Blanc ascent is governed by two unavoidable factors: refuge availability (the Goûter refuge opens mid-June and closes mid-September) and snow and weather conditions. Outside this window, the ascent becomes an extreme winter mountaineering experience, reserved for highly seasoned rope teams.
The answer to "when to go?" comes down to finding a stable 2-to-3-day weather window within this seasonal period. The ideal date depends as much on the Météo-France forecast as on the refuge opening calendar.

How to identify a good weather window
3 days of stability minimum
A 2-day window is the minimum, 3 days is ideal. A confirmed high-pressure system within 72h is a favorable condition.
Summit wind < 40 km/h
Above 40 km/h of wind at the summit, conditions become dangerous. Check forecasts at the 4,800 m level (not sea level).
Summit temperature > -20°C
Below -20°C with wind, frostbite risk is high for extremities. Check the 'feels like' temperature.
No storms forecast in the afternoon
In summer, convective storms form in late morning. A night start aims to be back down at the refuge before noon.
